At this point I am very confused and have no idea what the reading is going to be about. But as I continued reading, I was dragged into the story. I felt it was a little contradictory, like it would go one way and then turn around and go the other way. With the last song, la vida es un suño, I thought about how life is always changing directions. One moment things can be great, and within the blink of an eye, it can all reverse, turn out to be a lie, or simply disappear and everything is gone.

ReplyDeleteCarolina--what I love about Ry Cooder's stories (especially La vida es un sueño) is that the things said are from the point of view of the character. It's the trio man speaking--with all of his assumptions, prejudices and experience (including the general hospital and losing his family--and his own state--so that when he makes the disparaging remarks we have to realize that they are HIS remarks. Ry Cooder's brilliance is that he uses the character's voice to express (give point to) a larger set of ideas... I mean, who in the Anglo world would think of trío as opposed to mariachi as opposed to mambo(in terms of social status)..."class distinctions" seen in musical expression. And, of course, from the trío man's perspective!
